Kathmandu: Nepali Communist Party lawmaker Balawati Sharma has described Nepal’s failure to participate in a BRICS-related invitation as a diplomatic failure of the government.
Speaking at the House of Representatives meeting on Wednesday, Sharma questioned the government’s foreign policy and diplomatic role, saying Nepal should have made use of an invitation from a neighboring country. She demanded that the government explain why Nepal could not participate in the BRICS-related event.
Sharma recalled that then-Prime Minister ‘Prachanda’ had participated in a BRICS-related program in 2016, where discussions were held on trilateral partnership and development. She questioned why Nepal was unable to maintain such engagement at present.
“Why did Nepal miss the BRICS invitation from its neighbor? Isn’t this a failure of the government’s foreign policy and diplomacy?” she questioned.
Sharma urged the government to strengthen Nepal’s presence in international forums and give greater priority to diplomatic engagement with neighboring countries.
