Surkhet : Karnali Province Chief Minister Mangal Bahadur Shahi has pledged to amend the provincial Dalit Act to pave the way for the formation of a Dalit Development Committee.
The Nepal Dalit Morcha, led by its central member Basanta Kumar Bishwakarma, submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Shahi on Tuesday, urging the provincial government to establish the committee in line with practices in other provinces.
The Morcha said an institutional mechanism is needed to advance the social, economic, educational and political development of Dalits in Karnali. It noted that similar provisions are already in place in Madhesh, Bagmati, Koshi, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.
According to the Morcha, Shahi expressed a positive commitment to amend the Dalit Act, drawing on the models of the Province Sports Development Act, Karnali Province Academy Act and Mass Communication Act.
The Morcha said the proposed amendment could strengthen institutional arrangements for Dalit rights, representation and development in Karnali.
