Seventy-year-old Thanedar Chaudhary of Chauhatta, Maharajgunj Municipality\u201311, who had been suffering from prolonged vision loss, has regained his eyesight following cataract surgery. The moment he was able to see again after the eye bandage was removed was an emotional and joyful experience for him.<\/p>\n
During an eye screening camp held near his home on Bhadra 15, Chaudhary was diagnosed with cataracts. He was taken to the Basic Hospital using free transportation provided by the municipality. After undergoing surgery at the hospital, his eyesight was restored.<\/p>\n
Chaudhary said that in the past he had to travel to India for treatment, but receiving free treatment close to home has made things much easier for him.<\/p>\n
Sixty-five-year-old Radha Kori of Maharajgunj\u20131 also regained her sight after cataract surgery. She said the treatment made her feel as though the hope she had lost had returned.<\/p>\n
More than 150 senior citizens and economically disadvantaged people underwent cataract surgery during the two-day free eye camp organized by the municipality. Eye examinations, surgeries, medicines and dark glasses were provided free of charge. The municipality also arranged food, accommodation and transportation for the patients.<\/p>\n
Before the surgeries, preliminary eye screening camps were conducted in Wards 2, 3, 4 and 11. According to Radheshyam Jaiswal, chief of the municipality\u2019s health section, cataracts were identified in 185 people through those screening camps.<\/p>\n
The camp was organized at the Basic Hospital with financial support from Atlas Alliance Norway and technical coordination from Chhand (Kalebabu) Narayani Eye Hospital.<\/p>\n
Maharajgunj Municipality Mayor Abdul Kalam Khan said the municipality has adopted a policy of providing free healthcare within the municipality, particularly targeting senior citizens and economically disadvantaged communities. According to him, the municipality has been regularly organizing free eye camps since 2017 and more than 10,000 people have undergone eye surgeries so far.<\/p>\n
Following the surgeries, Mayor Khan, Deputy Mayor Ritakumari Chaudhary (Kurmi), Ward No. 1 Chairperson Pramod Chaudhary and others distributed dark glasses to the patients.<\/p>\n
